Avocet, Hummingbird Courses at Wild Wing Make for a Great Day

Wild Wing Plantation isn’t the four-course playground it was a decade ago, but there is still plenty of fun to be had at the Avocet and Hummingbird courses.

An 18-hole championship layout, Avocet, a Larry Nelson and Jeff Brauer co-design, places an emphasis on architectural creativity and playability. The fairways are wide, but miss them and hitting the multi-tiered greens in the proper spot may prove difficult.

Memorability of holes is a vital ingredient for any course, and Avocet excels in that regard. The course’s most challenging four-hole stretch is highlighted by the 406-yard (from the white tees) par 4 sixth. Water threatens off the tee and the double-green features three tiers that can seem never ending if you are putting from the wrong spot. It’s an unforgettable hole.

On the other end of the spectrum, the 14th hole, which plays 265 yards from the white tees, is one of the Myrtle Beach area’s shortest par 4s and among the most enjoyable.

If 18 holes isn’t enough, the nine-hole Hummingbird Course is a delight to play.

That type of diversity is what makes Wild Wing a joy to play.
